Also known as Madhurai Veeran, he is one of the most famous guardian gods, known for his valor as a warrior and the good deeds he has done for the city of Madhurai. Originally born to a king in Kaasi, he was adopted by a family and received the name “Muththu Kumaran” (Pearl-like Lad) and eventually went on to meet both his consorts Bommiammal and Velliyammal. He is worshipped by devotees seeking justice, protection and bravery. It is said that when he comes riding on his white horse, the world shakes and the asuras tremble in fear and he protects his devotees against the bad minded and punishes evil doers.

Ganesha, Pillaiyar or Vinaayagar is the beloved son of Shiva Shankar and Parvathi Mata. He serves as the remover of obstacles and grants devotees wisdom, knowledge and intelligence. As a result of his unwavering loyalty and love for his parents, he was granted the boon to be the first god to be invited for worship.

Hanuman or Anjaneyar, is the god of strength and courage and is widely known for his unbreakable love and devotion for Sri Raamachandra. Hanuman represents loyalty, humility, and fearless determination in the face of adversity, particularly shown in his crucial role in Sri Raama’s efforts toward rescuing Sita Devi. Sri Krishna or Maayan Perumaal as he’s known in Tamil, is the 8th incarnation of Vishnu Bhagwan and symbolizes divine love. Sri Krishna is also best known among Hindus for his integral role in the Bhagvad Gita and the Mahabharata. Perumaal is revered and respected as the protector of dharma as he states in the Gita: “Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness rises, I manifest myself to restore balance and uphold dharma.”

Munishvaran or Muniappa Saami, is another of the Tamil guardian deities, believed to be an avatar of Shiva Perumaan. He is linked to the full moon and is known to provide both physical and spiritual prosperity to his devotees when worshipped at this time due to the auspicious nature of the full moon. He is often worshipped by families as Kula Deivam (family god) as part of ancestral tradition for protection, guidance and maintaining balance from the earth to the sky.

Murugan, Subramanya or Shanmuga is brother to Ganapathi & son of Shiva and Parvathi. He is known as the god of war and victory and is widely worshipped within the Tamil diaspora with deep reverence. He is worshipped in numerous ways, the most famous being the hoisting of Kavadi with the belief that devotees will achieve victory, happiness and success through Murugan’s grace.

Also known as Naagoor Meeraan, he is a deity worshipped by Tamil Hindus and Muslims alike, especially known as Allah among devotees in the Caribbean.
